Western Isles Climate Action Network

We are inviting community groups from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis to take part in developing a new Climate Action Network across the islands.

So, how can we create a fair, thriving and sustainable future in the Outer Hebrides?

Come along to our second WI-CAN meeting on Thursday 8th December.

What is WI-CAN?

WI-CAN is a network of community groups that aims to inspire, develop and build capacity and connections in the Western Isles.

Supported through SCCAN WI-CAN is part of a national group of regional community climate action networks.

Over the coming months we will be visiting each island to find out about the amazing work you do in and with your community and how WI-CAN can support this.

As the network evolves this could include: specialist support to develop your ideas, projects, and organisation; training sessions, events, links to funding; resources and tool kits; as well as opportunities to share your knowledge, skills, and insight with others in the network.

Who can join?

We are open to any group and welcome a range of perspectives from different communities across the islands.

You might be supporting local growers; developing a community woodland; taking action on waste; tackling challenges with food, energy, housing, transport or poverty; conserving local landscapes and wildlife; or other issues that affect your community.

From small grass roots community groups to larger organisations we want to create a space where you can share your ideas and concerns and build positive connections with each other

Creating a Hub

Supporting communities is at the root of WI-CAN.

As part of the network there is the opportunity to propose a Climate Action Hub for the Western Isles. How this Hub is shaped and what it will do is for community groups to decide. Through WI-CAN we will organise a series of local events to inform this proposal and ensure that if we are to have a Climate Hub it is representative of all areas.

What now?

Our WI-CAN Launch took place on 10th November 22.

Over 35 groups from across the Western Isles attended. We discussed what the network should do going forward and how a Climate Hub in the Western Isles could be developed.
