Help!!! I cannot login!!!

The most common problem I have found in 15 years of using WordPress (and other CMS platforms). The issues are easier to troubleshoot if we know a bit more. For example:

  • a screenshot of the error
  • whether the error was WordPress or Wordfence (our security partner)
  • what you have already tried (resetting the password, deleting the site cookies, using a different browser or private browsing)
  • what device you are using (a phone, tablet or desktop)
  • what browser (Firefox, Chrome etc) and operating system (Windows, Ubuntu etc)

Problem 1 – Username or password incorrect

If your email address or your username is wrong you will have trouble. If you have multiple email addresses, check you have used the right one!

Always copy paste the password with no additional spaces or rogue characters or use the saved one in your password manager. Caps lock is a classic gotcha.

Reset the password – if you get the email, the username and email address will then be aligned.

If you don’t get the email, maybe you don’t have an account with that email address or username, but do check the SPAM box.

Problem 2 – My account was blocked by Wordfence

Wordfence handles security arrangements. It will block certain users e.g. those that do not exist.

If you type a username incorrectly you risk getting a temporary block.

If you are sure you typed everything correctly you can either try later (the lockout is temporary) OR enter your email address in the requisite box – it is not obvious – to receive the unblock link.

Problem 3 I don’t know my login details

Contact website@sccan.scot – remember that although email addresses to scottishcommunitiescan.org.uk are analagous to those to @sccan.scot they are aliases, other systems don’t know this. The email system is not linked to the website.

Problem 4 – I’m going round in circles – help!

Cookies! Occasionally – but only for regular users with multiple accounts, some login cookies will need to be cleared to be able to login.

One solution worth checking is to login via a private or incognito window. If that works, the login cookies are likely to be the culprit. Clear the sccan.scot and sccan.scot/mysite cookies and try again.

But if that fails
