About Us

Aim

West Lothian Action Network (WLCAN) brings together local individuals and organisations to ‘think global and act local’ and be Future Ready.

The aim of the network is to bring about meaningful change and provide a platform that will support, educate, encourage and enable people to make positive environmental changes in their everyday lives. These collective actions will help to tackle the Climate and Ecological Emergency by reducing emissions and increasing biodiversity.

We aim to create a safe space where groups of all sizes can share ideas and concern and build positive connections with each other.

  • Reduce impact: To reduce our carbon footprint and our use of the earth’s resources.
  • Get greener: Develop healthy green spaces, supporting food growth and wildlife.
  • Have a say: Join conversations with decision makers and influence our politicians.

Vision

Empowered communities engaged in building a net zero carbon and resilient place to live work and play and where natural ecosystems are valued and conserved

Mission

To share knowledge, skills and ideas across all sectors of the community around low energy, low carbon, active travel, renewables and reusables and to influence change in collective and individual behaviours and policies

Values and Principles

  • We are willing to learn from one another, recognising that our diversity of approach, skills and background enrich our community, and help us to create a culture that is healthy, resilient, and adaptable.
  • Science-based decision-making and traditional Indigenous knowledge are critical to addressing climate change.
  • We believe in the strength of community.
  • We encourage respectful dialogue, building bridges and finding common ground.
  • We believe in and practice inclusion.
  • All people have the right and responsibility to participate in solving climate change challenges.
  • Stories, experiences, knowledge and tools inspire and enable us to take concrete deep action.
  • We act in a manner that respects and protects the physical, mental and spiritual well-being of people and the natural environment.

Objectives

The West Lothian Climate Action Network (WLCAN) is very much about putting communities at the APEX. It is an opportunity to come together and decide on the steps to move forward, creating a strong bond to tackle what means the most to us and building solidarity amongst us. The more we share the more we learn from one another and expand our collective capacity.

  • To determine priorities and implement action plans for moving forward to address climate change.
  • To provide information and educate communities on local impact and solutions for Climate change through friendly actions everyone can take
  • To work with local stakeholders, businesses, schools and many other groups in our community to encourage climate friendly action
  • To cultivate, engage and support volunteers in community action on the environment.
  • To create and manage the Network to engage, enable and support broad-based community actions.
