Storm Babet – A watershed moment for Angus

Storm Babet's devastating impact on Angus last winter left families displaced and coastal dunes eroding. At the recent Erosion Summit at the LandxSea Film Festival, experts and locals shared experiences and solutions. As the storm season nears, the urgency to unite communities, businesses, and experts to address these challenges is more critical than ever.

Last winter storms took homes, lives and livelihoods from people across Angus. The Angus Climate Hub has spoken with some of those affected. As part of our recent Erosion Summit at LandxSea film festival in Montrose, we were honoured to share some of these experiences. You can watch Caroline Monro & Phil Duthie in Brechin (7 mins) and Vicky Whitecross Erosion in Montrose (4 mins).

The Erosion Summit brought together over 80 local people with knowledge and commitment from Prof Jim Hansom, Dave Wood, John Adams and Dave Dougan MP. People shared their fears, questions and understanding. This was a really important open session to allow local people to begin to work through these complex and crucial issues together. There are many good people and organisations already working on this, we need more.

As we approach the anniversary of Storm Babet, the impacts run deep. Many families are still not home, others continue to wrangle with insurance companies, the dunes protecting our coast for thousands of years disappear with every tide.

There is an urgent need to gather and respond, collectively and strategically. We need the knowledge and experience of all kinds of people in the room to find a good way forward. This will involve landowners, farmers, managers, engineers, hydrologists, businesses and of course communities. As the storm season approaches, it’s time to be at the table and not on the menu.
